Reliable counterspell for blue control and tempo decks. Refute trades the efficiency of cheaper counters for card advantage, letting you replace itself while disrupting your opponent's plans. The discard cost is minimal in decks built to leverage it—reanimator strategies, threshold decks, and graveyard-focused shells all benefit from the forced discard. Solid in Commander control builds and a reasonable flex slot in Pioneer and Modern where the cantrip effect justifies the three-mana investment.
