Melancholic Poet rewards instant and sorcery strategies with incremental life gain while pressuring opponents, but requires a critical mass of creature-targeting spells to justify its slot. Best in focused Pioneer or Modern decks built around cards like Counterspell effects or removal suites that naturally target creatures; in Commander, the effect is too slow and conditional compared to dedicated drain outlets.
